Chapter Eleven

In the hall of the hospital she collided with Sister Nell Davidson. She was a nice girl who had trained through the difficult years with Norah, and now worked in the Path. labs, which she had chosen because they interested her so much. She had always been mad about paths.

‘I say, Norah, could you use two tickets for a concert in the Festival Hall tonight?’ she asked. ‘I hate wasting them and have been trying to flog them but can’t find anyone interested.’

‘I’m afraid I can’t. My mother died last week and somehow everything seems to have gone bad on me. It isn’t that I don’t want to help, it is ‒ just that,’ and she shrugged her shoulders.

Nell Davidson looked at her. ‘Sorry about that and I do understand. By the by, one of your patients has been worrying us, Betty O’Hara. She’s got an odd blood count.’

‘An odd blood count?’

‘It’s strange that there should be anything wrong, she has just had a baby and she’s quite young.’

‘What’s the trouble?’

Nell Davidson looked at her with real anxiety in her eyes. ‘Suspected leukaemia,’ she said.

‘But that’s impossible!’ Norah was startled out of trying to conceal her shocked horror. ‘She was such a good patient, and such a very nice girl, the wife of a friend of mine.’

‘If this blood count is what we anticipate, there can be only the one explanation,’ said Nell Davidson. ‘It’s one of those complaints that hits everywhere. Something we all hate and dread, the enemy with all the cards in his hand, certainly all the trumps.’

‘Why do you suspect it here?’

‘There was something about the way she looked, and our man gets hunches. He is horribly right generally, and there was something about Mrs. O’Hara’s colouring.’

‘I just can’t believe it.’ Norah put her hand to her head and pushed back the dark hair.

‘What’s the matter, Norah? Why do you feel so badly about this particular patient? Leukaemia is as bad for anyone who gets it, surely?’

‘I knew her husband in Ireland.’

‘I see.’ She paused. Her eyes were searching Norah’s face almost as if she felt some doubt, something that was the key in a door which would open on a Bluebeard’s chamber of secrets. Then she changed her tone. ‘Norah, why not take these two tickets? I cannot use them, and going out and getting away from yourself after all the trouble you have had might be a help.’

‘I wonder if it would?’

Impulsively Nell thrust them into Norah’s hand. ‘Take them,’ she said, then turned and hurried away, whisking round the corner of the passage.

Norah walked out into the quadrangle to cross it to the Nurses’ Home, and it seemed that she did not know what to do next. Too much was happening. It was a coincidence that Pip was just coming down the street towards her. She had made a mental vow with herself that she would never see him again. If she did see him, she felt that it would be cruel
